When Jean first called ElderHelp, she was struggling to find words. Chronic pain from health issues had kept her homebound, making even the simplest days feel heavy. Her car had died, friends had drifted away, and without supportive family nearby, her closest companion was her cat. She reached out to ElderHelp asking for help with organizing, but what she truly needed was connection.
ElderHelp’s Care Coordination team recognized that and matched Jean with Jan, a friendly visitor volunteer. The two quickly discovered they’d grown up in the same hometown and shared other commonalities. They hit it off from the very first visit, and something special began to take root.

Slowly, Jean began to bloom. What started as warm visits at home evolved into outings to botanical gardens, museums, and special meals out. Together, they explore new places and share new experiences. Jan helped Jean rediscover her confidence and her curiosity about the world — and along the way, found something meaningful for herself as well.
“I always look forward to my time with Jean,” Jan shared. “I feel my support has helped her gain confidence. It’s also a give and take. I get as much out of this relationship as I give. The power of kindness is such a driving force for good.”
Beyond their friendship, Jean has gained the confidence to manage life’s challenges on her own terms. It’s a quiet but profound transformation that brought healing and hope.
She shared, “Knowing that someone genuinely cares about me makes me feel like I truly have a friend. The relationship with Jan — and my other connections at ElderHelp — have been lifesaving. They really make life worth living.”
