VOLUNTEER SHARES “GIFT OF THE SEASON”
Shared by Lori Barrios, ElderHelp Volunteer
As a newer volunteer, 2021 was my first experience with Holiday Angels. I’d heard about it from clients and other volunteers, but didn’t really know what to expect. What I learned changed the spirit of the season for both me and my husband. As we arrived at ElderHelp, we felt the joy and energy of the staff greeting us at plant-pickup. We marveled at the efficiency of the drive-through and loved the photo stop. Our dogs loved it too!
Our route included delivery to seven east county seniors. Everyone was so appreciative when we dropped off their gifts. Our last stop was Beverly’s house. Beverly’s daughter accepted the gift for her mother and assured us how much her mother would love it. As I got back to the car, Beverly’s daughter came outside and asked if I could come back to the house for just a minute, saying “My mom wants to thank you in person.” Struggling to walk, Beverly had come to the door, waving and smiling and wishing us a happy holiday.
We shared this story over and over throughout the holidays with friends and family who came to visit. It really transformed how we viewed the whole season. To think that one small act of kindness could make such a difference. We may have delivered a gift to Beverly, but the one we got in return was priceless.
